Strange Food
Been a while since I last posted. Mostly this comes from me being very busy at work, and very tired. I just can't surf the way I used to, and as a result I don't feel I have any new to contribute.

Cat Shit One
A little bit of background. Cat Shit One, released in the US as Apocalypse Meow, is a manga about a American recon (LRRP?) unit in Vietnam. The manga, which I've only seen the odd page here and there, provided the odd mix of gritty historical action and cute animals. In the manga, various animal species represented various ethnicities. Rabbits were Americans, cats Vietnamese, panda Chinese etc.
The animated feature looks like it'll be set in modern day. From what I've been able to read from the opening text sequence, the members of Cat Shit One are PMC Contractors.

OK, shameless Obama paraphrasing aside, this is one headline, supplied by the CBC, that shocked me at first.
2 men sentenced to death in China's milk scandal
OK, so I have no particular stance on capital punishment, probably because I have no real stake in it one way on another. That said, I probably fall more TOWARDS the Death Penalty stance, rather than away from it, mostly because I can more easily sympathize with those who might seek it as a form of retribution for a slain love-one.
But I think in the West we are not accustomed to hearing about CEOs and company presidents getting a 21-gun salute in the back of the head for gross misconduct. We might THINK, regarding a particularly heinous corporate villain who defrauds people of their hard-earned money, or whose products end in death, 'Yeah, the government should just CAP that mother fucker!'. But I don't think we expect it to ever happen, short of someone exercising their vigilante-bone.
Serial Killers and Baby Rapists, sure. Bernard Madoff? Probably not.
Unless you're in China.

Strange days...
It's been a few weeks since I've posted. Yes, the heat is unbearable, and on Monday Fukuoka had the dubious distinction of being the hottest place in Japan. Walking the 12 minutes from the train station to the school literally drenches me in sweat.
One of the new weather watch-words in Japan is Guerrilla Rain. Like its namesake, this Guerrilla Rain appears out of nowhere, rains HARD as hell, and then just as suddenly disappears. When I say hard, I mean like 70-100 mm of rainfall per hour! It's nuts. I was told that last Saturday, the school track field flooded to about 10cm, with random bits of detritus floating around.
So add to that this:
These are pics of a waterspout that formed in the ocean near my school. I am told that such things are unheard of in tihs area. The first pic is of a waterspout that formed north of our school. That was most definitely in the sea. The second pic was shot to the south of our school. There's no water down that way, and that may explain why it didn't completely form. While the clouds themselve are the main focus of that picture, you can see the initial formation of what I think is a tornado. Look just to the left of the electrical tower, and you'll see the cloud just starting to funnel downwards.
All I can say is freaky.

Only in Japan
Here's an interesting find from the land of the rising sun...
Yes, that is indeed Ice Cucumber flavoured Pepsi. It does smell something like cucumber, and the taste holds a hint of cucumber, but other than that it's pretty Pepsi-like. FYI, cucumbers are meant to evoke a feeling of coolness, hence (I assume) this odd flavour.
The other treat is a salted ice-cream bar. Yes, salted. Actually, there's a well documented connection between salty and sweet, like chocolate covered pretzels. Or... well, maybe not so well documented. Anyway, it's surprisingly good.
Also, perhaps I just wanted to test out my new camera.
